Lloyd Grant : lead guitar (solos only)
Then Lars managed to steal the name Metallica from a friend (Ron
Quintana) who was putting together a magazine and was also looking
for a name. The track 'Hit the Lights' was recorded for the compilation
album. On the original pressing of this album the bands name was
misspelled Mettallica. Due to the fact Brian Slagel (who put 'Metal
Massacre' together) wouldn't finance a re-recording of the track 'Hit the
Lights' the original demo version was used on the first pressing (By the
time the 2nd pressing of the album came out this track was re-recorded
with Dave Mustaine's solos -- also during these re-record sessions the
covers 'Killing time' by Sweet Savage and 'Let it loose' by Savage were
recorded). A few weeks later Lloyd Grant left to be replaced by a guy
called Mike and then in January 1982 by Dave Mustaine. James's flat
mate at the time Ron McGovney (after James had taught him to play)
filled in on bass. In April 82 they re-recorded four tracks:
'Hit the Lights','Mechanix','Jump in the Fire'
,'Motorbreath' this new version of 'Hit the Lights' appeared on the
second pressing of 'Metal Massacre 1' (also the recent re-release).
On May 25 Metallica played a gig at Lars' high school
(Backbay High School) managing to almost empty the hall.
On May 28 they played as a five-piece for the first time with
Jeff Parker on rhythm guitar. Parker, who went by the stage name "Damien
C. Phillips," signed his own pink slip by sneaking onstage early and
playing a goofy guitar solo. He was canned after that show.
The next
important event was in July 82 the famous 'No life til Leather' demo was
recorded. This demo was never officially released but spread like
wildfire. This demo inclued the following:
'Hit the lights','Mechanix','Motorbreath','Seek and Destroy',
'Metal Melitia''Jump in the Fire',and 'Phantom lord' and the lineup was.
Dave Mustaine : lead guitar (solos only)
One monday in August 82 a band named Trauma played the Whiskey a Go-Go
with a bassist named Cliff Burton. James and Lars were there that
night and were so amazed by his playing that they realized that this
was the bassist for Metallica.
With new guitarist Dave Mustaine on November 29 they played the
Old Waldorf in San Francisco with support from a band named EXODUS with
one Kirk Hammett on guitar, this was the first time they met.
A day later they played the last gig with Ron on bass at Mabuhay
Gardens. They soon asked Cliff Burton to join, on hearing
this Ron left the band. In Feb 1983 Lars, James and Dave all relocated
to San Francisco which is where Cliff lived. March 83 saw them of on the
road on a journey from SF to New York to play a number of dates organized
by Jonny Z of Megaforce records. During this journey Dave's drinking
problems were getting a bit out of hand. So the morning after they played
a date in Vandenburg supporting VENOM they asked Dave to leave. Meanwhile
Kirk was already on his way over by plane to replace him. They spent the
rest of April playing gigs.
In May 1983 they went into the studio to record
their first album, 'Kill 'em All,' produced by Paul Curcio. Originally
this album was to be called 'Metal up your ass'. In July 83 the album was
released and Metallica went out on the road for a two-month tour with Raven for
the 'Kill em all for One' tour (the Raven album at the time was 'All
for One'). During October-December they spent time writing new
material for the next album 'Ride the Lightning'. In Febuary 84 they
went on tour in Europe with VENOM starting in Zurich Switzerland and
covered Germany, France and Belgium and finished with the Aardshock
Festival in Zwolle, Holland. During this tour the Britsh label Music
for Nations released the 'Jump in the Fire' EP to coincide with the
tour.
After this tour they went to Copenhagen, Denmark to Record RTL
after which they went back on tour in Europe with Twisted Sister. The
album was released and the remainder of 84 and most of 85 was spent on
tour. Some of the dates included Donington 85 and the Day on the Green
Festival in San Francisco. During this tour MFN released the 'Creeping
Death' EP which included two covers namely 'Am i Evil' and 'Blitzkrieg'
originals by Diamond Head and Blitkrieg respectively. On the original pressing
Blitzkrieg was misspelled Blitzkreig. From September 85 to December 27 85
the band were in Copenhagen again recording the third album this time
with producer Flemming Rasmussen.
In early March 86 'Master of Puppets'
was released and Metallica were again on tour, this
time supporting OZZY OSBOURNE in the US. On June 26 James broke a
wrist in the infamous skateboarding accident. During the rest of the
tour James sang with his arm in a sling and John Marshall (a Metallica
roadie) stood in on guitar. On September 26 James played his first
gig on guitar again, but later that night on the way to
Copenhangen, Cliff Burton was killed when the bus driver
fell asleep throwing Cliff through the window.
Rather than giving in though, the band quickly began auditioning new bass
players. The one they chose was Jason Newsted, whose own band Flotsam +
Jetsam had recently released the album 'Doomsday for the Deceiver'.
The band soon entered the studio not to record an album but to
record an EP of covers to break in JASON. The EP was the
'$5.98 EP Garage Days Re-Revisited'. They played a few dates including
the Donington 87 festival, after which it was studio time again.
Because Flemming wasn't available they recorded two covers which
no one produced (Breadfan,The Prince).
Once Flemming was available they started work on album four at the 'One
on One' Studios in LA. Preceeding the album was the 'Harvester of Sorrow'
EP, which included the two previously mentioned covers. The album was to
feature the last ever material written by Cliff Burton (lyrics from 'To
live is to Die') and was followed by the bands first ever promo video.
'One' was released in three versions: a short 3 minute version just
featuring the band in a warehouse, a short 3 minute version featuring the
film clips and the warehouse shots and a full length version featuring the
film clips and the warehouse shots. The film footage
was from a film called 'Johnny Got His Gun.' The band soon started of on
the 'And Justice for All' tour during which a single 'Eye of the
Beholder' was released in the US and FRANCE. The tour included an full
stage set (unlike the 'Puppets' tour, which featured a backdrop and a few
white crosses) The 'Justice' setup included a statue of Lady Justice
("Doris") which exploded and collapsed (wow...) during the song '...And
Justice for All'. The tour was over two years long and
during 1990 they returned to the UK to play 4 shows without any stage set.
Following November 90, Metallica entered the studio to record the
fifth album, 'Metallica', a.k.a 'The black album.' Preceding the album was
a single 'Enter Sandman' (see discog for info).
On August 12, 1991 the album was released and went straight to No. 1.
Leading to five singles, a triple-live CD + three video package,
a double video and three years worth of touring which was only halted on
8 August 92 in Montreal when James was burned in a pyro accident.
The guys made another quick tour of the US in Summer '94, then took a year
off.
The band went into the studio (the Plant, Sausalito California) in early
February 95. They took a break in August to play Donington for the fourth
time, this time as headliners.
Fourteen of the 30 or so tracks written by the band were released in
the form of 'Load' on June 4, 1996.
The album cover for Load was designed by Andres
Serrano and is a picture of blood and semen, from a piece of art called
'Semen and Blood III' from a collection of his art called 'Body and Soul'
The guys headlined Lollapalooza in the summer of '96, part of the
reason they couldn't release all 30 tracks on a double record. A
three-month tour of Europe and a five-month tour of the states comprised
the first leg of "Poor Touring Me," which recently resumed in Australia.
Metallica played its first acoustic gig on Oct. 18, 1997, at San
Francisco's Shoreline Amphitheatre, as part of the Bridge Benefit. The gig
featured the debut of "Low Man's Lyric" and included guest appearances
from Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains and John Popper of Blues Traveler.
The remaining 13 tracks from the 'Load' sessions were
released Nov. 18 in the U.S. on the band's seventh record, 'ReLoad.' A
tour kicked off in April in Australia to support it. The guys are going to
hit Japan and possibly Europe before touring the U.S. in late summer/early
fall. See further down for dates and venues.

The guys are back on the road right now, touring in support of ReLoad. The
tour is being billed as a continuation of "Poor Touring Me" and will play
outdoor venues in the U.S. from June - September. Jerry Cantrell and Days
of the New are opening. See below for dates.
James confirmed recently on MTV that "The $5.98 EP: Garage Days
Re-Revisited" will be re-released soon. He mentioned that the band was
planning on adding some tracks to the six cover songs that appeared when
it was released in 1987. No word on what those might be or when we will
see this.
There is also a Metallica movie playing overseas. The film, which is being
shown in theatres, shows about 45 minutes of footage from the Fort Worth
show in May of 1997. Video of it is circulating in the U.S., but no word
has been given about if and when it will play in theatres over here.

Misc
----
Metallica logo was originally designed by James. The name Metallica
was stolen by Lars from Ron Quintana who was at the time putting
together a fanzine, Metallica was one of the possible titles for the
zine.
The intro the band used live from '84-'95 is "Ecstasy of
Gold" by Ennio Morricone, from the movie "The Good, The Bad and the
Ugly."
